Tinder fungus (Polyporus alveolaris)

Cell polypore (Neofavolus alveolaris) - a mushroom belonging to the Polyporus family, is a representative of the Polyporus genus. It is a basidiomycete.

External description

The fruiting body of a honeycomb tinder fungus consists of a cap and a leg, like many other mushrooms.

The hat is 2-8 cm in diameter, and can have various shapes - from semicircular, round to oval. The color of the surface of the cap can be reddish yellow, pale yellow, ocher yellow, orange. The cap has scales that are slightly darker than the base color. This color difference is especially noticeable in young mushrooms.

The tinder fungus has a very short leg, and some specimens do not have it at all. The leg height usually does not exceed 10 mm. sometimes located in the center, but more often it is characterized as lateral. The surface of the leg is smooth, has the same color as that of the hymenophore plates, and is white in color.

The mushroom pulp is very tough, white in color, characterized by an expressionless taste and a barely audible smell.

The fungal hymenophore is of the tubular type. It is characterized by a cream or white surface. disputes are large enough in size, measuring 1-5 * 1-2 mm. They are characterized by elongation, oval or rhomboid shape. The plates run down the leg. the height of the tubular layer does not exceed 5 mm.

Season and habitat

Cellular polyporus grows on dead wood of deciduous trees. Its fruiting period lasts from April to August. Sometimes, however, the fruiting of this species occurs later. Cellular polypores grow mainly in small groups, but cases of their single appearance are also known.

Edibility

The honey fungus (Polyporus alveolaris) is an edible fungus, although its flesh is very tough.

Similar types and differences from them

In appearance, the cellular polyporus cannot be confused with other mushrooms, but sometimes confusion occurs in the names. So, sometimes the described species is mistakenly called Polyporus alveolarius, although this term belongs to a completely different variety of mushrooms - Polyporus arcularius.
